In Shantelle Vanterpool’s Poetic Memoir, she presents her journey as an Artist in search of her muse. Travelling from her hometown in North Preston, Nova Scotia, to Sierra Leone, West Africa, the Chesapeake in the U.S., and Jamaica, she searches for the connections between her story and Queen Nanny of the Maroons.

Her story exemplifies an Artist’s pilgrimage to uncovering the essence of the muse that inspired her most priceless work of art and her own personal identity. Her quest takes her through trails of the middle-passage, venturing into slave forts and historic cities of freedom in Africa, and Maroon communities in Jamaica.

She recounts her experiences with indigenous communities in each destination, exploring the heritage connections that bind them together and form the root of her identity and that of her muse.
